- Richard and Shirley DeRuiter Scholarship Fund for Future Visionaries Scholarship This fund was established by the children of Richard and Shirley DeRuiter in recognition of the impact they have had on our community. With a firm belief in the strength and attributes of our community, Rich & Shirley invited the readers of Scene Magazine to travel with them on a journey to learn about the positive side of living and working right here in Battle Creek. They continue to be strong supporters and believers in helping their neighbors and because of that, want to support the youth of our community as they choose to continue their education right here in our community. Eligible candidates are graduates or graduating seniors from any public or private school within the greater Battle Creek area and Marshall area who seek educational opportunities beyond high school related to the publishing field which could include but not be limited to such careers as: communications, graphic design, art, marketing, English, journalism, history, etc. Applicants must attend a post-secondary institution within greater Battle Creek or Marshall and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Considerations are: demonstrate involvement in programs consistent with the nature of the scholarship.
